Men's Soccer Falls to Columbia, 2-0

Oct. 28, 2003

Box Score

NEW YORK, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - With the match scoreless through 70 minutes, Columbia rallied for a pair of goals in an 11-minute span to defeat Lafayette, 2-0, in a non-league match on Tuesday.

Sophomore Blake Lindberg collected the first points of his college career as he scored Columbia's first goal and assisted on the insurance goal.

Both Columbia tallies came off set pieces.

Lindberg settled a corner kick at the far post and drove home the game-winner at 70:32, then one-touched another corner to Oladero Ola-Niyi who redirected the ball for the second goal at 81:37.

Lafayette (7-5-3 overall, 2-1-2 Patriot League) held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks, including 4-1 in the first half, but came up empty on seven shots. Columbia held an 11-7 advantage in shots.

Dean Arnaoutakis made one save for Columbia (9-3-1, 2-1-1 Ivy League), while Mike Tortora (Willington, Conn./E.O. Smith) made three saves in the loss.

The Leopards, still seeking their first road win of the season (0-4-3), return to Metzgar Fields on Friday for a 7 p.m. match with archrival Lehigh. Friday's match carries paramount importance in the race for the final Patriot League Tournament berth. The Leopards are currently tied with Holy Cross for the final tournament spot, while a Lehigh victory on Friday would vault the Mountain Hawks over both Holy Cross and Lafayette.
