Men's Basketball Wins Thriller at Drexel, 69-68

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Sean Knitter's short jumper from the left baseline with 1:03 remaining put Lafayette up 69-68 and Jamie Hughes ' block on the defensive end with three seconds remaining made it stand up as the Leopards (3-1) escaped Drexel with a one-point victory on Tuesday.

Justin DeBerry scored a team-high 17 points, including a three-pointer with 5:56 left that gave the Leopards their first lead since the first minute of the contest.

Drexel (1-2) took control of the contest early, building a 14-point first half lead that the Leopards cut to seven, 38-31, by halftime.

The Dragons still led by 10, 48-38, early in the second half when the Leopards put together an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to two with 11:47 left. The teams virtually traded baskets over the next six minutes before DeBerry's triple put the Leopards up three, 59-56. From there, the lead would change hands four times and the score would be tied six times in the final five minutes.

Winston Davis converted a pair of free throws with 2:04 remaining to put the Leopards up 67-66 with 2:04 left, but Drexel's Sean Brooks answered with a pair 30 seconds later, setting up DeBerry and Hughes' heroics.

Sean Knitter scored 11 points and hit the game-winning basket with 1:03 remaining as Lafayette downed Drexel 69-68 on Tuesday.


Knitter finished with 11 points while Rob Dill chipped in 10. Eleven different Leopards scored in the contest.

Brooks collected career highs with 23 points and 16 rebounds, while Tim Whitworth tallied 12 points.

Lafayette returns to action on Friday, hosting Centenary at 7 p.m.
