Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Finale to Columbia 7-6

April 22, 2003

Box Score

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's lacrosse team closed the book on the 2003 season with a hard fought 7-6 loss to visiting Columbia on Tuesday night at Rappolt Field.

The Leopards were without leading scorer Jennifer Stone who was sidelined with a concussion suffered against Holy Cross. Junior midfielder Katie Curtin helped pick up the slack by leading the Leopards on the offensive end with two scores, including Lafayette's only second half goal.

The Leopards (3-13, 2-4) jumped on top 1-0 when freshman Lindsey Calla found the back of the net in her first career start. The goal was Calla's fifth in her last three games.

Columbia responded with a pair of quick scores and led 4-3 before Lafayette closed the half with two goals in the final two minutes. Kim Maron beat the Lion defense and knotted the score at 4-4 with 1:36 showing on the clock, and Katie Layng scored off a feed from Erin Gallagher with :02 remaining before intermission to give the Leopards a 5-4 advantage.

Curtin got the Lafayette offense going early in the second stanza with an unassisted goal at 26:19 for a 6-4 lead, but Columbia answered with goals on each of its next three possessions.

Grace Sterritt and Ellen Lowery connected on their second goals of the game, and reserve Molly Friedensohn notched the eventual game-winner off a free position shot at the 20:18 mark.

Although Lafayette did have chances to tie the score, the Leopard offense could not connect due in large part to Columbia's solid stick checks on the defensive end.

Leopard netminder Tracey Williams made 11 stops on the evening. Her counterpart, Katie Ridge, saved six.
