HAMILTON, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette trailed 6-0 at the half, and fell behind 8-0 before tallying its first goal at 28:05 in the second half in a 14-5 loss at Patriot League rival Colgate on Saturday afternoon.
Colgate (6-5, 3-1) struck first at 22:42 on an unassisted goal by Becky Ortolano. The Raiders would connect on five more attempts before the half, and outshot Lafayette (3-10, 2-2) 16-4 in the opening session.
Colgate's Ortolano and reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week Katie McVeigh got the Raiders going in the second half. Ortolano scored 51 seconds into the second stanza, and McVeigh notched the second of her game-high five goals at 28:43 to give Colgate an 8-0 advantage.
Jennifer Stone (Newtown, Pa./George School) got Lafayette on the board with a pair of unassisted goals at 28:05 and 25:31 respectively, but McVeigh thwarted any Leopard momentum with her third goal of the contest and a 9-2 Colgate lead.
Stone finished the game with a team-high three goals. Kim Maron (Blue Bell/Springside) and Katie Curtin (Oreland, Pa./Germantown Academy) added one goal each for Lafayette.
Lafayette returns home to play No. 17 Old Dominion on Monday at 4 p.m.
