EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Freshman Stefan McVeigh capped a big week for the Lafayette freshmen. He scored both of the Leopards' goals on Saturday as Lafayette defeated Holy Cross 2-0 in Patriot League men's soccer action.
Earlier in the week, McVeigh's first-year classmate Mark Price scored two goals, including the game-winner, in Lafayette's 3-2 overtime win over Siena. With the win on Saturday, the Leopards are now 10-3 overall and 4-1 in Patriot League play while Holy Cross goes to 6-5-1, 1-3-1.
With just under three minutes remaining in the first half, McVeigh gave Lafayette a 1-0 advantage. He knocked home his goal off a direct kick from senior co-captain Nathan Jolly at 42:06. It was Jolly's third assist of the season.
McVeigh put the game away in the second half, adding an insurance goal at 61:59. Junior midfielder Buster Wiand crossed a ball into the box and McVeigh connected with one of his six shots to run the final to 2-0. It was McVeigh's fourth goal of the season and Wiand's first assist of 2004.
Junior goalkeeper Mike Tortora recorded his fourth shutout of the season. He made two saves in 90 minutes. Holy Cross' Richard Whipple also stopped two shots and allowed a pair of goals in 90 minutes. Lafayette held a 13-5 shot advantage and each team took two corner kicks.
The Leopards return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Villanova for a 2 p.m. start.
