PISCATAWAY, N.J. (www.lafayette.edu) - Junior Amanda Eggleston almost immediately answered Rutgers' first goal with one of her own, with 10 minutes remaining in the second half, but the Scarlet Knights scored again two minutes later to hand Lafayette a tough 2-1 defeat in non-conference field hockey action on Friday night.
Marielle Zibman scored her first career goal for the game-winner, redirecting a penalty corner into the right side of the cage past Lafayette goalkeeper Jill Lambert with 8:14 left in the match.
Rutgers (6-12) went ahead 1-0 with 13 minutes to go as Mary Szymonowicz scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Eggleston provided Lafayette's answer with her third goal of the year off the Leopards' only penalty corner of the second half. However, Lafayette was unable to generate a shot on goal in the final eight minutes to fall to 4-13.
Lambert made five saves in goal for Lafayette, while two Rutgers goalkeepers combined to make three saves.
Lafayette will close its season on Tuesday, Nov. 2 against Lock Haven at the Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex. Senior Night will start at 7 p.m. at Rappolt Field.
