EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - In a match dominated by penalty corners, Colgate scored three times in the second half and goalkeeper Jacque DeMarco kept Lafayette off the scoreboard with 13 saves as Colgate beat the Leopards, 3-0, in Patriot League field hockey play on Saturday afternoon.
Lafayette (3-8, 0-2 PL) earned nine first-half corners but DeMarco was flawless in the cage as she made eight saves to turn away the Leopards. Most of the first half was played in Lafayette's offensive third of the field as senior Missy Farrand and junior Amanda Eggleston each put three shots on goal.
Colgate (8-4, 2-1 PL) forced the action at the start of the second half and after a succession of penalty corners, Natalie Heller scored off a pass from Jenn Weischolz five minutes into the period to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.
Ashley Schneider scored her ninth goal of the season, assisted by Lauren Remkus, at 47:10 after another of Colgate's nine second-half corners. Schneider's second goal of the match sealed the victory for Colgate as she teamed with Sarah McCarthy on a 3-on-2 situation.
McCarthy had a match-high nine shots, while Eggleston and Farrand each fired seven shots for Lafayette. The Leopards held a 23-18 lead in shots and a 17-12 advantage in corners. Sophomore Jill Lambert made nine saves in the cage for Lafayette, and senior Emily James made a defensive save in the second half.
Lafayette will host Syracuse on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Rappolt Field.
