Field Hockey Suffers Tough 2-1 Setback

Sept. 29, 2004

Box Score

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Freshman Virginia Satterthwaite's first career goal put Lafayette ahead 1-0 just 3:20 into the match, but the Leopards were unable to score the rest of the way as they fell, 2-1, to Rider in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday night.

Satterthwaite's goal was assisted by junior Jenna Bratz, as Lafayette (2-6) put pressure on the Broncs' defense early. Bratz played the ball through the crease and the freshman forward found the cage for the first score of her career, stopping Rider's three-match shutout streak.

Rider (8-1) responded two minutes later, as Maddy Boulden scored an unassisted goal at 5:27. The Broncs gained control of the match in the middle of the first half and put 11 shots on goal, but Leopard goalkeeper Jill Lambert turned them away, making six saves in the first 35 minutes.

After end to end action in the closing moments of the first half, the score remained deadlocked at 1-1.

A skillful individual play by Christina Ang, resulting in her 11th goal of the season, was the only second half scoring but it would be enough for Rider. The goal came with just over 22 minutes remaining in the match.

Krysta Bearish earned the win in the cage for Rider, which improved to 8-1 on the year.

The setback is Lafayette's fourth one-goal loss of the season.

Lafayette will open its Patriot League slate in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, Oct. 2 as the Leopards visit defending league champion American. The squad will stay in our nation's capital for the weekend to play Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 3.
