Box Score

HAMILTON, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Alvin Reed scored 26 points as Colgate held off Lafayette, 80-72, in Patriot League men's basketball on Sunday afternoon.

Kyle Roemer scored the first nine points of Colgate's 20-6 run to start the second half, and the Raiders led 50-32 with 14:33 remaining. Lafayette responded with the next 12 points, using exclusively freshmen and sophomores, to get back in the game.

Jamaal Hilliard hit a three-pointer, Jamaal Douglas (18 points, 10 rebounds) knocked down a pair of jumpers, and Hilliard drilled another three to make the score 50-42. Bilal Abdullah made a pair of free throws with 11:18 left to complete the stretch.

Andrew Zidar, who had 13 points and 15 rebounds, scored to give Colgate an eight-point lead, and Ted Detmer replied with an offensive rebound and putback. After Reed hit a three and Alex Woodhouse made a jumper, Paul Cummins stroked a three of his own to cut the deficit to 57-49 with 7:49 to go.

The Colgate advantage stayed between seven and 10 until Abdullah connected from downtown with 1:55 left to make the score 71-66. After Reed made one-of-two from the line, Abdullah scored with 1:36 remaining to cut the gap to 72-68.

Zidar made a pair of free throws, and Marcus Harley answered quickly with a jumper. Then Reed knocked down two from the stripe. Matt Betley gathered an offensive board after a missed three-pointer and converted to maintain the four-point deficit with 25 seconds left.

Lafayette fouled immediately to put Jon Simon on the line, and he made both. Douglas missed a three, Zidar brought down the board, and the senior finished the scoring with two free throws in the closing seconds. Colgate scored its final 14 points from the foul line, covering the last 4:46 of the game.

Douglas put the Leopards on his back in the first 10 minutes of the game, scoring 11 of Lafayette's first 15 points. An 11-4 run capped by a steal and layup by Abdullah tied the score at 22 all with 6:56 remaining. Colgate outscored Lafayette 8-4 from that point to lead 30-26 at the half.

Douglas equaled his career high with 18 points, and had 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Betley had a career-high 10 boards and contributed a pair of assists and steals.

Abdullah finished with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting, and Hilliard hit 3-of-5 three-pointers and both attempts from the line for 11.

Reed and Zidar were assisted by 12 points and nine rebounds from Woodhouse, while Simon also scored 12.

Lafayette will resume Patriot League play on Friday, Jan. 28 when the Leopards host Holy Cross at Kirby Sports Center. Army will visit Easton on Sunday, Jan. 30 to finish the first round of league action.
