LEWISBURG, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette's men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed at the Bison Invitational at Bucknell University on Saturday, the final tune-up before the Patriot League Championships on Feb. 24-26.
The men and women combined for 11 top-three finishes in the unscored meet that included Bucknell, Colgate, Army , Navy and American.
Freshman Julie Sauer recorded Lafayette's lone first-place finish on the day, claiming the 100 back in 1:00.82. Her time was the second-fastest posted by a Leopard this year and the eighth-fastest in school history.
Sauer later made up the second half of a three-four finish with Lindsay McCarthy in the 200 free.
Freshman Liz Geary was second in the 100 breast (1:10.51), clocking the eighth-best time in school history. Also claiming runner-up finishes were McCarthy in the 200 fly (2:18.74), Michelle Oswald in the 400 IM (4:45.98) and the men's 200 free relay team of Jakub Pritz, Greg Van Volkenburg, Stephen Connlain and J.B. Worster (1:26.73).
Third-place finishes went to Lauren Bedard in the 200 IM (2:18.29), Paige Hulsizer in 200 fly (2:21.97), Daniele Menard in the 200 breast (2:38.04) and the women's 200 medley (1:51.69) and 200 free (1:40.98) relays. Shelby Grabowski, Liz Helwig, Katherine Kaczka and Geary made up the 200 medley team, while the 200 free team was Erin Rosensteel, Geary, Helwig and Kaczka. The 200 medley team was just 0.31 seconds off the Lafayette record.
The Lafayette men's best individual finish was a fourth-place by Van Volkenburg in the 100 fly (53.59).
The Lafayette men and women are now off for two weeks before returning to Bucknell for the Patriot League Championships.
