EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Kevin Bettencourt scored 29 points and three other Bison had 14 each as Bucknell downed Lafayette, 89-69, in Patriot League men's basketball on Friday night at Kirby Sports Center.
Jamaal Douglas, who set a career-high, and Sean Knitter both netted 20 points for the Leopards.
A three-pointer by Charles Lee out of the 12-minute media timeout put Bucknell (15-6, 6-2) ahead 15-9 with 11:21 left. The Bison pushed their lead to 23-13 before two free throws by Knitter and a three from Pat Betley sliced the margin to five with 6:20 remaining. A 9-3 stretch, which included a pull-up three by Bettencourt, gave Bucknell a 32-21 advantage, which extended to 43-29 at halftime.
Consecutive three's by John Griffin put Bucknell ahead 64-43 with 12:37 left, and Bettencourt hit five triples after intermission to finish 7-of-10 from behind the arc.
Bucknell shot 59 percent (29-of-49) for the game, while Lafayette (6-15, 2-6) hit half of its shots (25-of-50). The Bison made 11-of-18 from long distance; the Leopards were 5-of-18. The contest featured remarkable free throw shooting, as the teams combined to make all 34 attempts after a miss by Andrei Capusan.
Chris McNaughton, Lee and Griffin all hit 14 for Bucknell. Marcus Harley had eight and Bilal Abdullah scored seven points for the Leopards.
Lafayette will host Colgate, which lost 63-53 at Lehigh, on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The game will be featured as CSTV's Patriot League Game of the Week. It will be carried live on the Lafayette Sports Network (RCN-4, WBPH-60), and shown on tape-delay at 4 p.m. on WFMZ-69.
