ANNAPOLIS, Md. (www.lafayette.edu) - Defending Patriot League men's lacrosse champ Navy used a 7-1 second-quarter advantage as the catalyst in a 14-1 win over Lafayette on Tuesday.
The Mids, ranked No. 6 nationally and picked to defend their 2004 title, broke open the contest with a pair of three-goal bursts in the second quarter.
Billy Looney's man-up goal at 6:55 in the second period triggered a 40-second burst that saw Navy (4-1 overall, 1-1 Patriot League) stretch a 3-0 lead to 6-0. Bart Seifert scored off a Leo Stinson assist to get the Leopards on the board with 56 seconds left in the half, but Navy scored three times in the final 50 seconds to take a 9-1 lead into intermission.
Tommy Wallin scored twice as the Mids added five goals in the second half. Wallin finished with a game-high three goals, while Graham Gill tallied two goals and an assist.
Lafayette (0-5, 0-1) actually out-shot the hosts, 8-6, in the first quarter, but still trailed, 2-0, after the first 15 minutes.
The Leopards will face their third straight nationally-ranked opponent next Tuesday, when they visit Army for a 7 p.m. contest. Lafayette is back home on March 26 to host a Bucknell Bison squad that upset Navy, 8-7 in overtime, over the weekend.
