EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women won 12 of 17 scored events, cruising to a 103-77 victory over arch rival Lehigh on Saturday afternoon at Rauch Field House. The Lehigh men bested Lafayette 101-80, despite the Leopards taking first in four of five field events.
On the women's side, the Leopards enjoyed strong performances all-around, highlighted by a sweep of both the 4x400 and 4x800-meter relays. In addition, reigning Patriot League Female Track Athlete of the Week, Katie Schultes, topped Lehigh's Jennifer Schappert in the 3,000 meter run. The sophomore beat Schappert, an NCAA qualifier, with a time of 10:11.06.
Kisha Thomas came up with a first-place finish in the 60-meter dash (7.91), while teammates Elizabeth Rybas (1:00.72) and Kate Evangelista (1:20.53) took first in the 400 and 500 meter events, respectively. Aside from Schultes, Deborah Fink highlighted the distance runs with a top finish in the 800-meter in 2:22.43.
In the field, veteran Daria Szkwarko matched her school record in the pole vault (11'3 ¼"), while Jessica Buzzell earned her initial first-place finish of the season in the long jump (17' 2 ¾"). Emily Cholak won the triple jump with a 35'8" mark. The 'Pards swept the top three finishes in both the shot and weight throws, as Pamela Glennon (40' 10 1/4") and Ashley Harbin (47' 1") took first. Andrea Cerbie and Vicky Melroy finished second and third, respectively, in both events.
The men dominated the field events, led by an Eastern IC4A qualifying performance from Shaun Adair. The rookie leaped 23' 1 ¾" to win the long jump. Junior Tyler Jones posted a pair of wins in both the shot put (52' 11") and the weight throw (52' 6 ¾"), while senior Jeff Sejour won the triple jump with a 45' 3 ¾" mark. The Leopards swept the triple jump event, as Steve Ekema-Agbaw and Adam Jones finished second and third, respectively.
In the track events, the 'Pards won the 4x800 relay, and Peter Reynolds represented the only other first-place finisher. The sophomore won the 800-meter run in 1:57.21.
The Leopards are off until a Jan. 27-28 trip to Lewisburg, Pa. to compete in Bucknell's Bison Open.
