NEW YORK, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - In their final tune-up before heading to Annapolis, Md. for the Indoor Patriot League Championships, the Lafayette track and field teams headed to New York's 168th Street Armory and the Lafayette/Rider Winter Games on Friday.
The Leopards came away with eleven top five finishes overall, while a pair of women qualified for postseason competition. Also highlighting the women's action was a record-breaking pole vault from winner Daria Szkwarko set a new Lafayette record of 11'5 ¼". The senior broke her own indoor record, which was previously 11' 3 ½".
Classmate Deborah Fink ran the 500 meter event in 1:15.75, which placed her second and was enough for an Eastern (ECAC) Championship bid. Junior Meghan Baker also qualified in the 800 meter run, finishing third in 2:14.12.
Pam Glennon (shot put; 40' ¾"), Kisha Thomas (long jump; 17'4"), and Leigh Kalinowski (high jump; 5'3").
On the men's side, sophomore Alex Wechsler placed fourth in the mile (4:18.03), while classmate Brian Vail finished fifth in the 500 (1:06.36). In the field events, junior Tyler Jones paced the Leopards with a second-place finish in the shot put with a 52' 6 ½" heave. Additionally, senior Jonathan Rowe took fourth in the 35 lb. weight throw (53'10 ½").
Freshman Shaun Adair placed second in the long jump (22' 3 ½") and junior Steve Ekema-Agbaw took third in the triple jump (44' 2").
The Leopards return to action this weekend at the indoor league championships at Navy beginning on Friday.
