EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - After day two of Patriot League Championships, the Lafayette men's and women's track and field teams stand in sixth and third, respectively. Finals conclude Sunday at Navy's Halsey Fieldhouse in Annapolis, Md.
The women finished a strong first day of action, as several athletes qualified for tomorrow's finals across the board.
Kisha Thomas qualified for the finals in the women's 55-meter dash with a 7.46-second sprint. Leading the way for the women in the distance events was sophomore Katie Schultes with a final-qualifying time of 17:28.53 (third) in the 5000m.
Representing the Leopards lone finisher in the multis, sophomore Leigh Kalinowski earned 2901 points and ended up seventh in the pentathlon.
For the men, sophomore Tom Blenk qualified for Sunday's final in the 55-meter hurdles with the second fastest time in the semi-final heats (7.78). Junior sprinter Travis Hutson also qualified for the finals with a 55-meter run of 6.58.
In the field events, sophomore Ashley Harbin took third in the 20 lb. weight throw (53'1"), while senior Jonathan Rowe took second on the men's side (35 lb.) with a 54'3 ¼" sling. Taking second in the women's long jump was sophomore Emily Cholak (17" 8 ¾"). Rookie Shaun Adair finished fourth in the long jump, leaping 22' 6 ½" for the men.
Both relays earned crucial points for the men and women, as the women's 4x800m team of Meghan Baker, Deborah Fink, Brittany Waldron and Kate Evangelista came in second (9:12.46) behind first-placed Bucknell. On the men's side, the Leopards finished fifth overall in the same event. Brian Vail, Alex Wechsler, Peter Reynolds and Robert Blum turned in a time of 7:47.15.
The Bucknell women and Army men lead the league heading into tomorrow's action, which begins at 10 a.m.
