La Salle Takes 16-9 Verdict in Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Emily Bonczek scored four of her five goals in the first 17:13 to stake La Salle to a 7-0 lead, and the Explorers held off Lafayette for a 16-9 win in non-league women's lacrosse on Wednesday afternoon in Philadelphia.

Bonczek and Kristen Davis both netted five goals for La Salle, which improves to 4-5. Madalyn Booth, who entered ranked first in the Patriot League and tied for fourth in the nation with 2.0 assists per game, had three goals and three assists for Lafayette (3-5). Kaleigh Mountain also registered a career-high three assists.

Bonczek and Davis both scored in the first 1:15 as the Explorers started quickly, eventually building a 9-1 lead before Casey Sharkey scored the first of her two goals with 4:24 left to make the score 9-2 at the half.

Lafayette blitzed La Salle for three goals in a 70 second stretch to open the scoring in the second half. Sharkey and Booth scored 11 seconds apart, both on assists by Mountain, at 22:34 and 22:23, and Booth helped on a goal by Samantha Ziegler 59 seconds later to bring the Leopards within 9-5.

Booth continued the quick strike attack, finding the net nine seconds after a goal by Ann Anderson gave La Salle a five-goal edge.

The Explorers used the next five-minute stretch to gain control of the contest for good, with Bonczek and Davis involved in three of the four goals. Bonczek scored a free position goal at 18:33, while Davis assisted on a score 30 seconds later and closed the spurt with an unassisted goal with 14:59 left.

Stephanie Kramer benefited from Mountain's final assist, and Kristin Ruminski closed the scoring for Lafayette with two goals in the last eight minutes. Davis closed the book for La Salle on an unassisted effort with one second remaining.

Chantelle McCormick made 15 saves in goal for La Salle, while Jaclyn Kushner had 12 stops while facing 30 shots for Lafayette. Kat Hueglin led the defensive effort, with four ground balls and six draw controls as the Leopards earned possession on 18 of the 26 draws.

Next up for Lafayette is a trip to Holy Cross on Saturday for its fourth Patriot League match of the season. The Leopards defeated Bucknell 8-6 before falling to American and Colgate.
