NEW YORK, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Columbia outscored Lafayette 14-1 in the first half and finished with a 19-6 victory in the season opener for both squads in non-league women's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon in New York City.
Kate Lombard (four goals, one assist), Elyse Pultz (three goals, two assists) and Marisa Marcellino (two goals, three assists) did most of the damage for the Lions. Sophomore Madalyn Booth and freshman Kristin Ruminski both scored twice for Lafayette.
Columbia opened a 5-0 lead in the first 7:10 before Booth got the Leopards on the board off an assist from freshman Casey Sharkey at 7:30.
The Lions scored 11 goals over the next 24:15 to put the contest away. Lombard, Rachael Ryan, Katie Warner and Holly Glynn each scored multiple goals in the stretch as Columbia outshot the Leopards 24-3 in the first half, and scored twice in the first 45 seconds of the second.
Booth assisted on a goal by Casey Sharkey with 23:55 remaining, and Ruminski tallied just over two minutes later. Samantha Ziegler, Booth and Ruminski rounded out the scoring for Lafayette.
Stephanie Marcon (five saves) got the start in goal for Lafayette and took the loss, and Jaclyn Kushner (six saves) came on in relief to play the final 43:34. Emma Mintz and Marcela Calidonio shared goalkeeper duties for Columbia.
Lafayette will return to action on Thursday, March 9 with a 7 p.m. start against Bucknell in the home opener at Rappolt Field.
