LEWISBURG, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Five student-athletes set new personal bests and two more bettered NCAA-qualifying standards for Lafayette track and field team this weekend at Bucknell's Bison Outdoor Classic. While Deborah Fink, Tyler Jones and Shaun Adair won their respective events, nine others recorded top-three finishes.
Fink's win in the 400m hurdles is her second straight in the event. The senior and defending Patriot League Champion in the event bettered her NCAA Regional time with a 1:00.79. Also for the women, sophomore sprinter Kisha Thomas finished third in the 100m dash (12.38), while senior Kate Evangelista took second in the 400m run with a time of 57.65.
The Lafayette women had a solid day in the field, highlighted by junior Lori Cooper's personal-record javelin throw of 135'6", which earned her second at the Classic and qualified her for the ECAC meet in May.
Senior Daria Szkwarko notched a new personal-best in the pole vault at 11' 5 ¾", while sophomore Ashley Harbin put more distance on her previous NCAA-qualifying heave in the hammer throw (182' 5"). Classmate Emily Cholak came in third in the triple jump (36'9").
Sophomores Kristen and Leigh Kalinowski recorded personal bests in the women's heptathlon on Friday, coming in third (4102 pts.) and sixth (3871 pts.), respectively.
On the men's side, Adair won the long jump with a 23' 8 ¼" leap to make the IC4A cut with a personal best as a rookie. Jones bettered his IC4A mark in the discus, winning with a 162'9" hurl. He came in fourth in the shot put (51'5 ½").
Junior Steve Ekema-Agbaw put up an even 46" triple jump to take third, while also finishing in fifth behind Adair in the long jump (22'3").
On the track side of things, senior Tom Blenk finished the 110m hurdles in 14.93 to finish third.
The Leopards are back in action with the Lafayette Invitational this weekend. The hammer throw will be held at Fisher Field on Friday at 3:30 p.m., while the remainder of the meet will take place on Saturday at East Stroudsburg due to the Fisher Field renovation project. The meet is slated to start at 10 a.m.
