Lafayette's Nelson Named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week

Oct. 22, 2007

EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette sophomore goalie Philip Nelson was tabbed as the Patriot League's Goalkeeper of the Week for the third time this fall. This most recent honor comes after he helped Lafayette (6-2-5, 1-1-2) shutout Army on Saturday afternoon in a key Patriot League match-up.

Nelson, a Mechanical Engineering major, made six stops in the Leopards' scoreless tie against Army on Saturday, just one save shy of his career-best. He played all 110 minutes in the double overtime battle against the Black Knights, recording five of his six stops in the opening half. The shutout was his seventh of the season and Lafayette's eighth overall.

This season, Nelson has started all 11 of the games in which he's appeared for Lafayette. He has a 0.50 goals-against average to go along with a save percentage of .878. Opponents have scored just six goals against the Attleboro, Mass. native this fall.

The team's five ties match a single-season high for the Lafayette men's soccer program with the 2001 squad was the only other team to finish a season with five ties.

The Leopards, currently ranked third in the NSCAA's Mid-Atlantic Region, continue Patriot League play when they travel to Bucknell on Saturday, Oct. 27 for a 7 p.m. match.
