Box Score
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman B.J. Glenn scored two first-half goals to lead the Lafayette men's soccer team (7-2-5, 2-1-2) to a critical 2-1 win over Patriot League opponent Bucknell on Saturday night. The win was the Leopards' second league victory of the fall and snapped the Bison's five-match home unbeaten streak.
Despite taking four fewer shots than Bucknell (16-12), Lafayette made sure the scoring opportunities it did have counted. Glenn tallied a match-best six shots, scoring on two of those shots. Junior Corey Dempsey and sophomore Chip Aronica each chipped in an assist on Glenn's two scores for their first points of the fall.
The Leopards' defense, which entered the game ranked seventh in the nation with a 0.49 goals-against average (GAA), was again solid. Lafayette goalie Philip Nelson had four saves in the game and allowed just one goal despite the 16 shots taken by the Bison.
Glenn opened the scoring early, putting Lafayette ahead at the 7:46 mark. Glenn took a Dempsey pass, maneuvered around a Bucknell defender and then fired the ball past Bucknell goalie Joey Kuterbach.
The lead remained at one until the 34th minute when Aronica passed the ball upfield. Glenn and a Bison defender both overran the ball but Glenn was able to regain possession. He reversed direction just outside the box and put the ball into the back of the net to give the Leopards a two-goal advantage at the half.
Lafayette maintained that two-goal advantage for the majority of the second half. The Bison did get back in the game as they got on the scoreboard with just under five minutes remaining. Ross Liberati headed the ball past Nelson to put Bucknell on the board and cut the lead to one. Lafayette's defense buckled down for the remainder of the match, however, and Lafayette left Lewisburg with the key Patriot League win.
The Leopards are back in action when they host No. 19/20 West Virginia on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on RCN-4 and WBPH-60.
