NEW YORK, N.Y. - Six Lafayette women claimed top-three finishes, while the men came up with four as the Lafayette Track and Field team geared up for next weekend's Indoor Patriot League Championships, held at Army beginning Feb. 16, at the Lafayette-Rider Invitational at the NYC Armory on Friday night.
Meghan Baker highlighted the women's performance on the track with a second-place, ECAC qualifying outing in her bread-and-butter event. The senior finished the 800-meter run in 2:13.08, less than one second off the winner, Stephanie Herrick of TCNJ. Junior Brittany Waldron took third in the 1000-meter event in 3:01.73.
Baker, along with Elizabeth Hall, Mary Rollyson and Lauren Phelps claimed fourth in the 4x400-meter relay, crossing the finish line at 4:03.03.
Senior Vanessa Youngs took care of the sprints for the Leopards, placing ninth in both the 60 and 200-meter dashes in 8.11 and 26.24 seconds, respectively.
Senior Ashley Harbin brought home the weight throw title with a 56' 2" heave, while junior Andrea Cerbie followed with a close third with an even 48-foot toss. Sue Izevbigie and Vicky Melroy took fourth and sixth in that same event. Cerbie, Izevbigie and senior Pam Glennon all finished in the top six in the shot put.
A second-place performance from sophomore Jessica Buzzell in the long jump (18' 2 ¼") also highlighted the jump events. Rookie Jacqueline Bruscella's 36' ¾" leap in the triple jump was good enough for third.
On the men's side, junior Brian Vail won the 500-meter event in an IC4A qualifying time of 1:04.81, while classmate Aaron Buchman took first in the 800-meter run in 1:55.01. Sean Casey (fourth) and Robert Blum (fifth) also finished in the top five in the 800-meter event.
Lafayette's 4x400-meter relay team of Vail, Ever Ruiz, Adam Ballester and Bradley Williams took fourth in 3:22.19.
Third place finishes from seniors Tyler Jones and Steve Ekema-Agbaw capped a solid evening for the Lafayette men. Jones took third in the shot put (52' 2 ¾") and Ekema-Agbaw finished the same in the triple jump (46' 11 ¾"). Kyle Clayton (long jump) and Sean McAuley (weight) also recorded top 10 finishes in their respective events.
The Patriot League Championships are set to get underway at West Point, N.Y. at 10 a.m. this Friday.
