EASTON, Pa. - Junior attack Maddy Booth fueled the Lafayette offense with six goals and added three assists on the day, but Lafayette could not overcome a hot and speedy La Salle team in a 22-13 shootout on Thursday afternoon at Rappolt Field.
The Explorers (4-2) jumped on the Leopards (0-6) early and often, as six of their first seven shots resulted in goals and took a 7-1 lead on an eight-meter shot with 21:26 on the clock. Freshman attack Maria Drehwing halted La Salle's run with a score (20:30) on a pass from sophomore midfielder Kristin Ruminski, as Lafayette went on to own five of the next seven goals to cut the lead to 11-6 in favor of La Salle. Booth scored four goals, two of which came one-on-one against La Salle keeper Brittany Friedrick, while Drehwing finished the run with a floater to the back of the net with 7:25 remaining in the half.
Sophomore midfielder Emily Archibald found Booth again with just over two minutes to play, but La Salle snuck a final goal in with just 20 ticks on the clock. The Explorers led 14-7 at intermission.
La Salle's Jill Davis got things going in the second half with consecutive goals before Booth stopped the run with her fifth score of the day with 21:40 left to play. The Explorers answered with four straight before Booth came through again, this time snaring a behind-the-net pass from freshman midfielder Julia Bateman midway through the second-half action. Booth's tally ignited a stretch of three straight goals for the Leopards, as rookies Sydney Peyser and Sofie Grossman found the net over the next four minutes.
The Explorers continued to pad the score over the remaining ten minutes, while Lafayette managed two. Ruminski took an assist from Booth at the 6:45 mark and added her second goal of the day on a flick with 50 seconds remaining.
Booth packed the box score with 15 shots, six goals, three assists, six draw controls and three ground balls, all of which were team-highs.
Freshman Christine McDougal played all but four-plus minutes in the net and collected eight saves.
Lafayette will wipe the slate clean when the team hosts defending league champion Holy Cross on Saturday in the Patriot League opener at Rappolt Field. A noon draw is scheduled.
