EASTON, Pa. - Seniors Mike Tilley and Luke Sullivan each netted goals in a 2-0 Lafayette win over Manhattan on Tuesday night. The win was the Leopards' fifth of the season and extended their unbeaten streak to six matches, dating back to Sept. 7.
Both the Lafayette offense and the defense were firing on all cylinders against Manhattan, as the Leopards netted multiple goals for just the third game this season. The Lafayette defense held the Jaspers to just four shots in the game, including none in the opening half. Anthony Sepe recorded an assist on both of the team's goals in the match.
Lafayette goalie Philip Nelson recorded his fourth shutout of the fall as he made two saves against the Jaspers. The Leopards doubled-up Manhattan in shots, taking eight in the game, including two by Scott Hawkins and Kevin Miller.
Neither team had many scoring chances in the beginning of the first half but the Leopards were aggressive in the back while the offense continued to pressure the Jaspers' defenders. The pressure paid off when a Sepe corner kick set-up a scoring opportunity for Tilley. Tilley headed the ball past the reach of Manhattan goalie John Ciano for the first goal of the match and his third of the season.
The second goal of the half also came on a header, this time following a Manhattan foul as Sullivan found the back of the net with 11 minutes left to play. Sepe was credited with an assist on the goal, his second of the match and third of the season.
Manhattan's offense applied a bit more pressure in the second than it did in the first, with the Jaspers finally taking their first shot of the game in the opening minutes of the second half. Fernando Londono fired the shot but Nelson came up with the save, his first of the night.
An offsides call against Lafayette with just over 26 minutes remaining ended a scoring chance for Kevin Miller and the Leopards' shot at a third goal. Hawkins' header at the 24:40 mark went right at Ciano, who made the save to keep the game at 2-0 in favor of Lafayette. Kenn Stearns' pass to Hawkins with just over eight minutes on the seemed like a guaranteed goal, but Ciano made another key stop to prevent the Leopards from scoring in the half.
