NEW YORK, N.Y. - Lafayette track and field had a strong showing against some of the toughest competition in the country on Friday at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the New York Armory in New York City. The Leopards closed their first day of competition with two ECAC/IC4A qualifiers and a handful of personal bests.
Senior Pete Reynolds set a new personal record in the 1,000-meters, which he ran in 2:28.05 to tie for ninth place. It marked the second time this season that he hit the IC4A qualifying mark. Sophomore Matthew DeBlander also participated in the event and finished 25th (2:29.47).
Freshman Janica Austin also ran a personal best time on Friday. She placed 19th in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.69, narrowly missing advancing to the finals in the event. Austin currently has the fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles in school history.
Sophomore Kerry Taylor ran 17 seconds faster than her previous personal record to finish 36th in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:32.39. Freshman Ryan Stasiowski represented the Leopards in the men's 3,000-meters and finished 47th (8:47.82).
The second day of competition will begin tomorrow with the women's 5K at 9:00 a.m. Field events start at 9:05 with the championship division of the women's weight throw. The awards ceremony will commence at 5:15 p.m.
