EASTON, Pa. - On Monday, the USA Women's Field Hockey team was eliminated from medal contention after Amy Tran recorded a shutout against Great Britain, but the team was unable score. The scoreless draw left the American team in fourth place out of six teams in Pool B with just the top two going on.
Team USA had 11 penalty corner opportunities, but was unable to convert any against the No. 9 nationally-ranked Great Britain team. This was the first Olympic appearance for the United States squad since receiving an automatic bid in 1996 as the host nation. The Americans have not medaled since 1984.
The United States defeated nationally-ranked No. 8 New Zealand on Aug. 16 for the squad's first victory of the 2008 Olympic Games. Keli Smith opened scoring in the game to put the Americans up 1-0 in first 39 seconds of the game. Team USA went on to the 4-1 victory before playing Great Britain on Monday.
Tran will return to Lafayette field hockey as an assistant coach once her national team obligations are complete. This was the first Olympic experience for Tran, who earned her 100th international cap in the team's first game against Argentina in Beijing.
