EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette field hockey team secured its second shutout in its previous three games on Wednesday night, blanking Monmouth 4-0. With the win, sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Andersen recorded her fifth-career shutout.
The Leopards (5-3) held Monmouth (0-7) to only one shot in the first period and five shots overall in the game, four of which were taken by Hawks forward Enza Mazza.
Lafayette's offense had no problem matching its defense's solid effort. Senior Maggie Condon led three different Leopards in scoring with two goals.
"I think as a team our commitment is defense first, and we were really solid with that today. That really gives us the opportunity to win," Head Coach Andrew Griffiths said. "When we have the number of chances that we had in this game, we're going to get goals. It's great to get goals from different people. It really helps the team and the team's atmosphere."
Condon penetrated into the circle with three minutes remaining in the first period to give Lafayette a 1-0 advantage at the half.
The Leopards didn't wait long to score again as junior Kelly Hilovsky, with an assist by freshman Carolyn Cabrey, whipped in a goal from the left side less than a minute into the second period. Cabrey later scored her first career goal nearly 13 minutes into the second half.
Lafayette's final goal came on one of its 10 penalty corners as Hilovsky and defender Jaclyn DiSanti assisted Condon in her seventh score of the season.
The Leopards will return to Rappolt Field on Friday to face New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
