EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette field hockey team finished out its five-game homestand on a high note: a 3-2 victory over Radford on a dreary Sunday afternoon. Both teams braved inclement weather for most of the game as rain poured steadily on Rappolt Field.
Though senior midfielder Maggie Condon led in scoring once again with two goals, including the game-winner, it was Lindsay Majno who put Lafayette on the scoreboard first.
Majno connected on a shot from the top of the circle less than three minutes into the game to score her third goal of the season.
Radford responded roughly nine minutes later when Lara Cariker capitalized on a penalty stroke, but the Leopards struck again before the close of the half to take a 2-1 lead. With an assist by Jaclyn DiSanti, Condon scored her first goal of the game.
After the break, Radford elected to substitute Jennifer Wisniewski for starting goalie Megan Stucke, but it did little to stop the Leopards' attack. After forcing a penalty corner, Condon chipped in her second goal of the day with an assist from Kelly Hilovsky.
The Highlanders forced a corner of their own two minutes later and Alex Wladich scored with an assist from Stephanie McLamb. As time expired, Radford forced one more corner, but the Highlanders were unable to get a clear look at the cage and the Leopards emerged soaked with the win.
Head coach Andrew Griffiths said because of the game's weather conditions - which made ball movement difficult - he hopes this win in particular will give the Leopards the momentum they need when they travel to face No. 13 ranked Penn State on Wednesday.
"I think today's win is important for us because it showed that under some pressure, we were able to hang on and show some mental toughness," Griffiths said. "We're going in on a winning note to play a tough team. The game will be completely different style of game and a completely different environment. It's always good to go in on a winning note."
