EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's lacrosse team hit the road for the first time in the 2009 season and came away with a 15-4 victory over Wagner on Wednesday afternoon. The Leopards were led by sophomore Tom Perini with six goals and one assist.
Lafayette wasted no time getting on the board, as Perini started off his day with a goal at the 11:05 mark of the first period off a Matt Mersky assist.
The Leopards went on to score the next four goals, two more from Perini off assists from Colin Serling and Stewart Inman, coupled with Serling's first career goal at the 10:01 mark of the quarter.
After Wagner cut its deficit to three at the 2:49 mark, Perini went on the attack again, this time using a John Galassi assist to open the second quarter scoring at the 7:40 mark. Chris Ahern notched his first goal of the season just over three minutes later off the first of four assists from Stefan Bauer on the day as Lafayette took a 6-1 advantage into intermission.
The Leopards didn't slow down following halftime, scoring the first five goals of the second half, including two man-advantage goals from Perini, on Bob FitzPatrick's first career assist, and Mersky to cap off the run. Inside the 5-0 run, Mersky notched his first goal of the game off a Kevin Dunbar assist which was followed by another goal from Serling and Perini, both off Bauer assists.
Two Galassi goals to end the third period and start the final quarter made the lead 13-2 with 11:19 remaining in the contest. Ahern and sophomore Eric Teschemacher found the back of the net for the final two Leopard goals as they cruised to the 15-4 win.
Lafayette was 3-for-5 in man-advantage situations and outshot the Seahawks 45-19. The Leopards also held a 39-26 advantage in ground balls. Lafayette did not commit any penalties during the contest.
Senior goalkeeper Jeff Canfield grabbed the win, tallying six saves in his 45 minutes of work. Vinny DePasquale and Jason Montoya preserved the lead, each notching a save over the final 15 minutes of the game.
Lafayette was dominant in the face-off circle, going 15-for-23 in the game. Cesar Munoz was 7-for-9 in face-offs on the afternoon.
Perini's six goals were a career-best, surpassing his previous mark of five goals last year against Wagner.
The Leopards now return home and shift their focus to another non-conference contest on Saturday when they host Quinnipiac. Face-off is set for 1 p.m.
