EASTON, Pa. - For the majority of the game it looked like the Lafayette women's lacrosse team had a chance to send Sacred Heart home with a loss, but six second-half Pioneer goals scored over a span of six minutes led to an eventual 12-9 Leopard defeat. Michaela Corn chipped in nearly half of Lafayette's scores with a season-high four.
Emily Archibald also scored multiple goals (2) for the Leopards, bringing her total to seven in the last two games. Lafayette (0-10) was aggressive on both ends of the field, taking 23 shots and forcing Sacred Heart goalie Chelsea Wagner to make 11 saves, including seven in the second half. The Leopards also scooped up 19 ground balls to the Pioneers' 13 and won 12 draw controls.
Sacred Heart (3-5) edged the Leopards with its 27 shots and was led in scoring by Mary Montesarchio's four goals.
The teams traded shots and goals for the first 30 minutes of play. Corn got the scoring started with an unassisted goal at 27:34 but Sacred Heart responded with five unanswered scores to take a 6-1 lead with 20 minutes still play in the opening half.
Rather than give in, the Leopards continued to attack and scored five the last six goals in the opening half, including a stretch of five straight. Archibald's free position shot at 3:55 knotted the game at six, which remained the score at the midway point.
Neither team could find the back of the net for the first 10 minutes of the second half until Corn came through with her third score of the game to give her squad the 7-6 advantage.
Unfortunately, much like in the first half, the Pioneers responded by scoring six straight goals to make it 11-7 with 12:07 remaining.
The Leopards scored two of the game's final three goals, including Corn's score at the 1:26 mark, but time ran out before the Leopards could come all the way back.
Lafayette returns to league action on Saturday when the Leopards host American at 1 p.m.
