RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Leopards recorded their second highest scoring output of the season but it was not enough to propel the women's lacrosse team to victory as it dropped an 18-10 decision at Manhattan on Wednesday night. Six players, four of which were freshmen or sophomores, combined for the 10 goals.
Freshmen Lauren Curley and Lisa O'Donnell each netted two goals for Lafayette (0-5) as did sophomore Lauren Brown. Brown also added an assist to finish with a team-high three points. Seniors Emily Archibald and Kristin Ruminski and sophomore Michaela Corn also scored for Lafayette. Goalies Emily Bjork and Alexa Biale each played a half for the Leopards.
The Leopards nearly equaled the Jaspers in shots (32-31) and won 19 draw controls to Manhattan's 11. They also finished the game by scoring four goals in the final four minutes. The Jaspers' Caralyn Hickey led all scorers with seven points (6 g, 1 a).
Ten minutes into the game saw Lafayette take a 3-2 lead on Corn's score, but five unanswered Manhattan goals made it 7-3 with eight minutes to play. Three more Jasper goals in the final four minutes, including two in the last 90 seconds, and gave them a 10-4 advantage at the midway point.
O'Donnell scored the first goal of the second period to make it 10-5 but Manhattan (2-1) rattled off another 6-0 run. Lafayette did not give in, however, and scored five of the game's final seven goals, including four straight to end the game. Curley capped off the Leopards' scoring by scoring back-to-back goals in the final 1:20 of the game.
The Leopards open Patriot League play this Saturday with a 3 p.m. game at Navy.
