EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's lacrosse team out-scored Holy Cross in the second half but ran out of time to complete a comeback, dropping a 9-7 decision Saturday afternoon. Senior Kristin Ruminski's hat trick led the Leopards' offense, which scored five goals to the Crusaders' three in the final period.
Four other Lafayette players scored in addition to Ruminski. Goalie Emily Bjork finished with 14 saves, including eight in the second period. The Leopards (0-13, 0-6) capitalized on five of 14 free position shots.
Meg O'Leary led the Crusaders (4-10, 2-3) with a game-high four goals. Holy Cross took 34 shots to Lafayette's 25 and committed just 13 turnovers while the Leopards had 24.
Holy Cross dominated the opening half, scoring six of the eight goals. The Crusaders opened the game with four unanswered scores, including two from O'Leary.
The Leopards broke that streak with two straight goals of their own, one from Michaela Corn and the other from Julia Bateman.
Unfortunately the Crusaders capped off the first-half scoring with two more goals to take a 6-2 lead at halftime.
O'Leary netted the first goal of the second period before Ruminski scored her first goal of the game at 22:04 to make it 7-3.
Maria Drehwing followed another Crusaders goal with her first score of the contest with 16:19 still to play.
O'Leary scored her final goal of the game at 11:38, making the score 8-4, but the Leopards kept fighting and rattled off three unanswered scores.
Emily Archibald took advantage of a free position shot and made it 9-5, and Ruminski scored back-to-back goals. Her final score came with six seconds on the clock to make it a two-goal game (9-7) but time expired to end the Leopards' chance at the comeback.
Lafayette continues its three game homestand on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. game against La Salle.
