EASTON, Pa. - Pitcher Ali Henry threw a career-high 12 strikeouts in a complete game to deliver a 1-0 win in the second contest of the Lafayette softball team's doubleheader against Holy Cross on Saturday. The Leopards dropped game one, 4-1, for the split.
Lafayette handed Holy Cross a win in the first game, allowing batters to reach on errors and score runs off wild pitches. Of the Crusaders' four runs, only one was earned.
The Leopards headed into the bottom of the seventh facing a 4-0 deficit but avoided a shutout when Stacey Kushner got things going with a single to shortstop. With two outs, Kristin Garganio singled to right field, advancing Kushner to third.
First baseman Kerry Griffin singled to plate Kushner before Jessika Smith closed out the game by popping up to the shortstop.
The Leopards came out on all cylinders to start off the second game. Henry struck out five of the first seven batters she faced.
Freshman Gwen Turner matched the intensity offensively when she cracked her way into Lafayette's record books for most triples in a season after belting her fourth triple of the year as the leadoff batter in the first inning. She now ranks at No. 8 and needs two more to catch the school's record holder, Jessica Baimonte '85.
The Leopards didn't light up the scoreboard until the bottom of the second when Emma Kline doubled to the left field wall, sending home Lafayette's winning run. The four-year letterwinner went 2-for-2 on senior day.
With the win, Lafayette (9-21, 5-9) snapped a seven-game losing streak. The Leopards return to the field on Sunday at noon for another doubleheader against Holy Cross (10-28, 4-10).
