April 27, 2009

EASTON, Pa. - When the Lafayette women's lacrosse team closes out the 2009 season at Temple on Wednesday, the afternoon will be about much more than the outcome of the game. The Leopards and Owls are joining together to raise breast cancer awareness through their involvement with the Army of Women organization.

All players, parents, friends, family and fans are encouraged to visit the website - www.armyofwomen.org - and join the organization as a show of support in raising breast cancer awareness.

The organization was founded by Dr. Susan Love, who founded Army of Women to increase awareness of breast cancer and to give females and males the opportunity to become involved with and contribute to the cause.

In addition, pink game balls will be in use on Wednesday and pink ribbons will be sold at the game to raise money for Army of Women. All fans in attendance are encouraged to wear pink.

Lafayette will also have two honorary captains for Wednesday's game: Catherine Hanlon '79 and Erica Bonime '80. Both are advocates of women's breast cancer awareness. Hanlon will give a pregame speech to the Leopards and both Hanlon and Bonime will speak to the fans in attendance during halftime.

Hanlon, a Biology major at Lafayette, was a captain of the lacrosse team as well as a varsity basketball letterwinner. She received her M.D. from Hahnemann University in 1983 and entered the U.S. Air Force as an aerospace medicine specialist.

Bonime was an Economics major at Lafayette and lettered in tennis. An avid fan of the lacrosse team, she was a consistent presence at Leopard lacrosse games. Bonime continued her education at Pace University-Lubin School of Business.

Both Lafayette (2-14) and Temple (3-12) enter Wednesday's game having won two of their last three games. The Leopards are coming off a thrilling, 14-13 win at Villanova last Tuesday night. This marks the season finales for both squads.
