EASTON, Pa. - The sun beat down at Metzgar Fields on Wednesday afternoon but the Lafayette softball team made it rain. Four different Leopards belted homers in Lafayette's doubleheader split versus St. Peter's.
Thanks to the Leopards' barrage of hits in the bottom of the fourth in the first game, Kasey Karr threw a four-hit, 11-0 shutout in five innings. The Peahens stole Lafayette's momentum in the second game, taking a 6-5 decision in extra innings.
In the first game, Lafayette headed into the fourth inning holding a 3-0 advantage thanks to a run by Kristin Garganio in the second and a Christina Giambrone two-run bomb over the left field wall in the bottom of the third.
All the action took place in the top of the fourth. Kerry Griffin started off with a single up in the middle in the lead off spot and the Leopards went on to shell pitcher Nicole Schnecker for nine hits and eight runs. Garganio added a two-run homer and Giambrone belted her second grand slam of the year during the attack.
With the homer, Giambrone upped her career bombs to 26, tying Kristen Ruckno '08 for the school's career record. Lafayette closed out the inning with an 11-0 lead and got three quick outs in the top of the fifth for a mercy rule.
In game two, the Peahens regrouped to build a 5-0 lead in the top of the fourth thanks Christine Crowell's double, which drove in three runs.
The Leopards kept St. Peter's scoreless in the next three innings while they rallied in vain for a win.
In the bottom of the sixth, leadoff hitter Gwen Turner singled up the middle and Karr hit her second homer of the year to put Lafayette on the board. With Kerry Griffin's two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, the Peahens' once comfortable lead dwindled to 5-4.
With two outs, Karr singled past the first baseman and Giambrone came up to the plate. She doubled to the center field wall, driving in Karr for the tying run.
In the top of the eighth, Jackie Cross singled in the leadoff spot for St. Peter's, advancing the runner to third. Amanda Rice reached on Giambrone's error, which allowed pinch runner Ashley Brown to score the winning run.
Lafayette started off the bottom of the eighth with a single by Garganio, but Stacey Dorn hit into a double play. Sara Bussiere grounded out as Lafayette's rally fell just short of the win.
The Leopards return to the field on Thursday for their final regular season game when they host Fairleigh Dickinson in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
