PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Lafayette women's lacrosse team may have ended its season with a 15-5 loss at Temple, but the game was about much more than the outcome. Both squads, and their fans, showed their support of the Army of Women organization and its initiative to raise breast cancer awareness.
The Army of Women organization was founded to increase awareness of breast cancer and to give females and males the opportunity to become involved with and contribute to the cause. All fans in attendance at the game were encouraged to wear pink and pink game balls were used.
The Leopards also had two honorary team captains for the game - Catherine Hanlon '79 and Erica Bonime '80. Hanlon spoke to the team prior to the game and both Hanlon and Bonime addressed the fans at halftime.
The Leopards, which entered the game having won two of their last three games, were downed by the Owls' 15-goal performance. Maria Drehwing led the team with a three-point effort (two goals, one assist), and senior Kristin Ruminski capped off the season with her 105th career goal.
Goalies Emily Bjork and Alexa Biale each played a half for the Leopards and combined for seven saves.
Lafayette edged Temple in shots (34 to 25) and ground balls (32 to 24), but the Owls won 13 draw controls to the Leopards' nine and goalies Jessica Colucci and Katie Phillips made 17 saves for Temple, which ended the season by winning three of its last four contests.
The Owls opened the game with five goals in the first 14 minutes before Julia Bateman netted the Leopards' first goal at 12:15 to make it 5-1. That goal would mark Lafayette's only score of the half as Temple entered the break with an 8-1 lead.
Drehwing netted her first goal of the game less than four minutes into the second half. The Owls responded with four straight goals, making the score 12-2.
Drehwing broke that streak with her second score which was followed by Meg Ohlmacher's goal at the 16:50 mark to cut the lead to 12-4.
Two more Temple goals made it 14-4 before Ruminski scored with less than three minutes to play, making it a 14-5 game. The Owls had the final goal in the game at the 1:28 mark to make it a 15-5 final score.
The Leopards ended head coach Alison Fisher's inaugural season with a 2-15 overall record with both of those wins coming in the final four games of the season. Wednesday's game marked the final career contest for the Leopards' two seniors - Emily Archibald and Ruminski.
