Drehwing, Shah Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars

EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette junior women's lacrosse player Maria Drehwing (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) and senior golfer Anoop Shah (Calabasas, Calif./Viewpoint) were two of 12 Patriot League student-athletes honored as recipients of The Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award.

The award, established in 1992 to honor undergraduate students who exemplify the standards of tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr., is given to student-athletes of color who exemplify high standards in academics, athletics and service to the community. The winners must have completed one full academic year at their respective institutions, earned a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher, be an active member of an intercollegiate athletic team and demonstrated a record of campus or community service.

Drehwing, a double major in Art and Government and Law, boasts an overall GPA of 3.52. She is also a two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member.

Drehwing spent the 2008 fall semester studying abroad in England and completed a public relations interim externship in New York City in January.

Golfer Anoop Shah


A Second-Team All-Patriot League selection as a freshman, Drehwing appeared in 12 games this spring and tallied nine goals and two assists for 11 points. For her career, she has 65 goals and 15 assists in 45 games.

Shah, an Economics and Business and Spanish double major, was a four-year member of the golf team. He boasted a 3.57 GPA this past spring and graduated with a cumulative GPA of 3.33.

The Leopards finished fifth at this spring's Patriot League Golf Championship and took second at the 2009 Lehigh Valley Cup.
