EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's and women's track and field teams were honored by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross County Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Both teams were named to the 2009 USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic Track and Field Teams, released earlier this month. The men's and women's teams were joined by only one other Patriot League school on the lists.
The USTFCCCA honors completed what was an already successful academic year for the program as the Leopards placed 18 on the Patriot League Honor Roll. The men's squad, led by freshman EXCEL scholar Michael Thompson, posted a 3.26 grade point average (GPA), finishing sixth overall among all Division I institutions. Senior psychology major Kelly Hinkel paced the women's team with a 3.85 GPA while the team boasted a 3.27 GPA for the term.
Lafayette's season was highlighted by Seamas McGuire, a junior javelin thrower, who was the first Leopard to qualify for NCAA Track and Field Championships in 30 years. McGuire finished 21st in national competition and is the reigning Patriot League Champion in javelin.
