WORCESTER, Mass. - No one would know B.J. Glenn missed the first three games of the men's soccer season, as he scored his third goal in five games to give Lafayette a 1-0, double-overtime victory against Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon.
Glenn came through in the clutch, scoring the game-winning goal with only 44 seconds remaining in the second overtime period. He knocked the ball in off a far right corner pass from rookie Sean Peckham, whose assist gives him a team-leading eight points this fall.
Lafayette (5-2-1, 1-0-0) goalie Philip Nelson made four saves to pick up his fifth shutout of the fall. Neither squad held a distinct advantage in any major statistical category, as the Leopards finished with 10 shots to Holy Cross's nine, although they did take six corner kicks while limited the Crusaders (1-6, 0-1) to three.
The offenses saw the majority of their scoring chances come in the first 45 minutes as both teams took five shots in that opening period. Nelson made three of his four saves during that span. With one second remaining, Jake Johnson had a shot blocked to keep it a scoreless game at the half.
The Leopards had just one shot in the second period while the Crusaders managed just three. Neither team had a look at the goal for the final 10 minutes of regulation, sending the game into overtime.
The first overtime period also passed without a goal, and with only two combined shots. Twenty seconds into the second and final extra session, freshman Josh Brown had a shot that went high four minutes later, classmate Blake Fink's shot sailed wide.
With less than a minute remaining, it seemed as if the teams would have to settle for a tie, but Glenn and Peckham came through in the clutch to propel the Leopards to a critical road victory.
Lafayette returns home on Wednesday to host Villanova at 7 p.m. Next Saturday, the Leopards host archrival Lehigh at 7 p.m.
