PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Playing its second game in three days, the Lafayette men's soccer squad hit the road to face Temple on Sunday afternoon and came away with a draw as the teams played to a scoreless tie. The teams were nearly even in every statistical category as they both picked up their first ties of the fall.
Lafayette (2-0-1) held a slim, 13-11 edge in shots, including a combined five in the overtime periods. Goalie Philip Nelson made seven saves to pick up his second shutout of the season and 13th of his career. His Temple counterpart, Bret Mollon, made six saves, half of which came in the first overtime session.
Sophomore Wayne Maminski and freshman Sean Peckham combined to take seven of the Leopards' 13 shots. With the tie, Lafayette remains unbeaten this fall.
The Leopards had three shots in the opening half, two of which came in the final eight minutes of play, while Nelson made two saves to keep the Owls off the scoreboard.
Temple's offense kept Nelson on his toes in the second period as the Owls (1-0-1) fired off eight shots, forcing Nelson to make five saves. His most crucial save may have come on a shot by Mart Dell'Arciprette with less a minute remaining in regulation. Lafayette had five shots of its own in the half but Mollon was forced to make only one save as most of the shots missed their mark.
The Leopard defense buckled down in the extra sessions and prevented the Owls from taking a single shot in either overtime period while Lafayette combined for five. Unfortunately, Mollon came up with three saves and a shot from Maminski with two minutes remaining hit off the post and marked the final true scoring opportunity for either squad.
Lafayette has the week off before hosting its Ninth annual Lafayette Soccer Classic next Friday and Sunday.
