WASHINGTON, D.C. - Lafayette field hockey scored two goals against top seeded American on Saturday afternoon but fell to the nationally ranked team, 6-2 in the Patriot League Championship Final. Lafayette made its ninth appearance in the Championship game while American won their eighth consecutive Patriot League Title.
The Leopards were outshot 19-8 and senior goalkeeper Kelsey Andersen made six saves in the loss while Hannah Weitzman made three stops.
American took a 1-0 lead as Melissa Casale scored just over six minutes into the game. Tournament MVP Christine Fingerhuth added a second goal and the Eagles went into the half with a 2-0 advantage.
The Eagles scored two minutes into the second half and Lafayette's freshman Haley Keenan put a point on the board for the Leopards. Sophomore forward Deanna DiCroce entered into the circle and found Kennan in front of the goal and shot past the keeper.
The Eagles added another three goals before Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year Meghan Cicchi scored the Leopards second goal off a penalty corner. DiCroce and Emily picked up the double assist on the play.
Cicchi, DiCroce and Carolyn Cabrey were selected to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team.
