WORCESTER, Mass. - The Lafayette softball team fell 6-5 in 10 innings to Holy Cross in the opening game on Sunday in the end of the four-game series. The Crusaders shutout the Leopards 9-0 in the final game of the series.
Holy Cross (13-27, 7-9) scored three runs in the first inning off an Erin Fleming single and Sam Fregenti single where two runs came in off Leopard errors.
Lafayette (14-30, 3-13) opened the first game with a Gwen Turner triple to right field, followed by a Kasey Karr single to left field bringing Turner home. Karr came around when Kristin Garganio picked up a base hit bringing the Leopards within one run, 3-2.
After a Crusaders run in the top of the third, Lafayette answered back with a run of their own when Garganio hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Karr around for the run, Holy Cross held the 4-3 edge.
Lafayette picked up its first lead of the game in the fifth inning, as Garganio singled to center field and picked up two RBI in the inning as the Leopards took a 5-4 lead.
Holy Cross tied the game up in the seventh with a home run and forced the game to extra innings, Keeley Seniuk stole home to score the winning run for Holy Cross.
The Leopards fell in a hard second game 9-0 getting only five hits in the game.
Karr pitched all 10 innings in the loss, giving up 11 hits and striking out nine batters of the 44 she faced. Christine Hilcken pitched a little over one inning giving up five runs and picking up her eighth loss of the season.
The Leopards head home and host Rider on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
