EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette softball came back strong in the second game against Drexel on Wednesday afternoon and Metzgar Fields. The Leopards dropped their first game 8-0 in six innings against the Dragons. The Leopards put up a fight in the second game with six doubles, but it was not enough as Drexel went on to win 13-7.
Drexel's (10-13) Hillary Allen pitched all six innings allowing two hits from Lafayette. Stacey Kushner and Emily Noel counted for the hits for the Leopards. Kasey Karr pitched 4.1 innings in the loss, giving up six runs and striking out five.
Lafayette (9-18) gave everything it had in the second game. Drexel started its first at bat with five runs.
The Leopards shook off the first game as Karr singled and advanced on a throw. Freshman Jordan Parsons doubled to bring Karr home. Kristin Garganio followed with a walk as Stacey Kushner hit the second double of the inning and brought Garganio around to home. The Leopards cut the lead 5-2.
In the second inning, Noel doubled and on a sacrifice bunt by Carly Feiro Noel advanced to third to set up the run. Karr brought Noel home off a sacrifice fly to right field. Drexel led by two runs, 5-3.
The Dragons soon was on fire as Rachel Campbell doubled and then stole third. Caprice DeMirjian singled and got the RBI on the run home. At the end of the inning, Kelly Downes singled with two runners on base and brought them both in for the scores. Drexel took an 8-3 lead.
The Dragons added four more runs in the fourth inning to give them a 12-3 edge over the Leopards.
Lafayette scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth as Noel singled, followed by a Feiro single and a Parsons single. With the bases loaded Garganio doubled and picked up 3 RBI.
Drexel homered to start off the seventh inning. Lafayette's defense stepped up its game and did not allow another Dragon run. Lafayette trailed 13-6 going into the bottom of the seventh.
Kerry Griffin started the inning with a single. Gwen Turner followed with a ground out to the shortstop allowing Griffin to advance to second.
Stacey Dorn was up to bat when she doubled to bring Griffin home for the score. It was not enough as the Leopards fell 13-7 to the Dragons.
In the loss, Noel pitched one inning giving up five runs as relief pitchers Christine Hilcken pitched two innings with two runs and one strike out and Ali Henry throwing five innings giving up six runs.
Lafayette continues Patriot League play when the Leopards host Bucknell for a weekend of doubleheaders; Saturday's game starting at 1 p.m. and Sunday's at noon. Sunday's game can also be seen on LSN All-Access.
