EASTON, Pa. - Senior Cara Lyons had a stand-out game on Wednesday night under the lights at Rappolt Field. Her two goals and assist led the Leopards to a 3-0 victory over Penn. The Leopards are now 3-5 going into Patriot League play, while Penn fell to 1-6.
On a fast break up the left side of the field, Lyons took a shot on goal and Penn's goalkeeper Kieran Sweeney made the save. The ball rebounded off her pads and found sophomore Deanna DiCroce who took the shot to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead.
After the clock ran out in the first half, Penn drew three penalty corners for themselves attempting to tie the game before halftime. The Quakers failed on all three corners and the Leopards maintained their 1-0 lead.
Three minutes into the second half, Lyons scored off a penalty corner with senior Meghan Cicchi assisting on the goal, Leopards took a 2-0 lead at the 37th mark.
Off another Lafayette penalty corner, Lyons found the ball again off a rebound and put it in the back of the cage with 16 minutes left to play in the game.
The Lafayette defense played hard only allowing four shots by the Quakers and one shot-on-goal, which Kelsey Andersen made the save. The Leopards racked up 13 shots, seven in the first half and six in the second.
"Today's game was a full team effort," said head coach Andrew Griffiths. "They played with determination inside the circle and played for the second changes that ultimately paid off."
Lafayette opens Patriot League play on Saturday at noon as the Leopards welcome the Colgate Raiders to Rappolt field.
