WEST POINT, N.Y. - Lafayette's inside-out tandem of Nick Petkovich and Jared Mintz provided the offense for the Leopards in an 83-60 win over Army on Wednesday night. Petkovich scored a career-high 18 points on six three-pointers and Mintz put in 20 points while going 10-for-12 from the line.
The Leopards shot 52 percent form the floor and hit 10 three-pointers as four players reached double figures. Tony Johnson enjoyed a solid game in every statistical category, contributing 13 points, five assists, four boards and two steals in 31 minutes. Jim Mower added 11 points.
Lafayette (8-13, 3-3) scored the first bucket of the game before Army ran off 15 straight to lead 15-2 with 13:51 left on the clock. Jeremy Hence (12 points) scored eight points for the Black Knights (10-11, 2-4) in the span while Lafayette went nearly six minutes without a point.
The Leopards used an 18-4 spurt to get in the game. Mintz kicked it off with four points and Petkovich stoked the flames with a pair of three's on consecutive possessions to cut the lead to 19-17. Levi Giese's followed with his own three ball at 7:48 for a 20-19 lead with 7:48 left.
The Maroon and White ran off 11 straight from 2:26 to just under a minute left in the half. Petkovich drilled two more three's and Rob Delaney added another. Lafayette led 40-34 at halftime.
The Leopards broke open the game in the second half, opening with a 27-12 run. Six players scored in that span. Petkovich hit a three off a Johnson assist at 16:50 with the shot clock winding down. Lafayette led 54-38.
Lafayette capped off the night with a Mower to Darion Benbow alley-oop with 4:28 left in the game. The 23-point victory was the largest margin of victory this season.
Lafayette shot a scorching 62 percent from the floor in the second half and out-rebounded Army 40-26 for the game. Army was led by 28 points from Ella Ellis who had five three-pointers.
The Leopards get back to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. at American. That game will be televised by CBS-College Sports.
