WASHINGTON, D.C. - For the second consecutive season, an overtime goal by American's Alessane Kane got the best of the Lafayette men's soccer team. This season, the Eagles' sophomore netted the lone tally in a 1-0 contest in Washington, D.C.
With the loss, the Leopards stand a 6-4-3 on the season with a 2-1-1 league record. Lafayette remains in second place in the Patriot League with seven points. The Leopards are tied with Lehigh in the standings - though Lafayette holds the tiebreaker due to victory over the Mountain Hawks last weekend. The two Lehigh Valley squads could be joined at seven points by Colgate, which plays at Army tonight. American maintains its place atop the Patriot League at 4-0-0 and improves to 6-8-1 overall.
Goalkeeper Graham Heydt went the distance in net for the Leopards, stopping seven shots in 91:11 of action. Lafayette was outshot, 17-8, and took three strikes on goal - all of which were corralled by American keeper Billy Knutsen. Sean Peckham, Blake Fink and Peter Adubato attemped the three shots on target for Lafayette.
After 90 scoreless minutes at Reeves Field, Kane's goal came just 1:11 into the extra time. Dej Marco and Seth Goldman connected to find the forward, who shot from 15 yards out to beat Heydt for the game-winning "golden goal". The marker was Kane's sixth of the season.
Lafayette resumes Patriot League play on Saturday, Oct. 22 with a 7 p.m. visit from Colgate. The Leopards will honor the Class of 2012 at Oaks Stadium prior to kickoff against the Raiders.
