EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette continued its dominant weekend on Sunday at Rappolt Field, cruising to a 7-0 victory over Quinnipiac. Six different Leopards scored in the win and Jessica Deutsch combined with Mara Kish in goal to keep Quinnipiac (6-4) off the scoreboard.
"I thought we were very strong organizationally," head coach Andrew Griffiths said. "Carolyn Cabrey, Emily Valeo and Brittany Blass did a great job anchoring the defensive unit."
The Leopards (5-5) jumped on Quinnipiac early on, scoring three goals in the first 16 minutes, a lead they would take into halftime. Kelsey Mead opened the scoring 5:22 into the game after a Leopards penalty corner. Blass put a shot on goal that was stopped by Bobcats goalie Nicole Lewis but rebounded right to Mead. The freshman paused and beat Lewis on the right side of the cage for the eventual game-winner.
Nifty stick handling from Valeo after a broken corner play set up the second goal 12:16 into the game. The junior beat two Bobcat defenders and slid a pass across the goal mouth where Aimee Smith was positioned for the tap in. Smith's goal was her fourth of the season.
Deanna DiCroce received a pass from Mead on the left sideline and found herself one on one with Lewis. The QU goalie came out of the cage to challenge and DiCroce navigated around her to the left and deposited the ball in the cage for her fifth goal of the year.
Lafayette surrendered only one shot on goal in the first half, which followed a Quinnipiac corner. Kimberly Cunniff took a low shot from the top of the circle that was turned away by a sprawling Deutsch, who earned her first collegiate win in the cage for the Leopards.
The Leopards added another tally early in the second half, when a ball off Kristin Heaney's stick deflected toward Mead who knocked it high in the air over Lewis' head and into the cage, increasing the lead to 4-0.|
The Maroon and White would tack on three more scores before the end of the contest, including a penalty stroke from Valeo, an unassisted marker off Cabrey's stick and Hanna Sotiropoulos' first career goal.
"We moved the ball quickly and effectively across the field today," Griffths added. "Our second chance opportunities were very good and it made a huge difference."
Kish made two late stops in the cage to preserve the shutout after taking over in goal at halftime.
In addition to its 18-5 shots advantage, Lafayette earned 11 corners, while Quinnipiac had five.
The Leopards returns to action on Oct. 8 when they travel to Lewisburg, Pa. for a meeting with Bucknell. The game is slated for 12:00 p.m.
