EASTON, Pa. - A scrum in the box in the 110th minute produced the lone goal of the match as the Lafayette men's soccer team fell, 1-0, to visiting Patriot League foe Colgate on Saturday evening. The Leopards got four saves from goalkeeper Graham Heydt in the loss.
Lafayette now stands at 6-5-3 overall with a 2-2-1 Patriot League record. The Raiders improve to 9-3-3 on the season and 3-1-1 in League action.
Heydt and Colgate goalkeeper Grant Reed each made four saves in the match. The Raiders also benefited from a defensive save by Barrett Metzger, who deflected a strike by Kyle Scharfenberg that had beaten Reed early in the second half.
The goal came with just 30.7 seconds showing on the clock. The Leopards cleared away several final-minute chances by the Raiders before Mike Reidy deflected a ball that spun to the left foot of Shane Conlin, who buried the chance from seven yards out to give the visitors the 1-0 win.
Just two minutes before Colgate's golden goal, the Leopards had their own opportunity to win the match. Alec Golini sent a ball to the streaking Wayne Maminski, but the senior's attempt toward the near post was hauled in by a leaping Reed. Lafayette also had a chance in the first period of extra time, but an attempt by Scharfenberg off of a Peckham corner kick was negated by an offside call.
The Leopards are back in action on Tuesday, hosting NJIT for the final home match of the season. Patriot League play resumes on Sunday, Oct. 30 at Army at 3 p.m.
