Men's Soccer Tops Bucknell But Misses Patriot League Tournament

Nov. 5, 2011

Box Score

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Lafayette men's soccer team got the win it needed in the regular-season finale at Bucknell on Saturday - fueled by two goals from Kyle Scharfenberg - but didn't get the help necessary to advance to the Patriot League Tournament.

With the win, the Leopards finish the season at 9-5-4 overall and 3-2-2 in the Patriot League. Lafayette has posted a winning campaign in all 11 seasons under head coach Dennis Bohn. Despite the triumph, the Leopards did not get the Navy loss at Colgate or Lehigh loss or tie to Army needed to advance to the Patriot League Tournament. The Leopards, who missed the tournament by a single point last season, will fall short via tiebreaker this year, owing to their loss and Navy's win over American in the regular season. Bucknell will not repeat as Patriot League champions, finishing their season at 7-9-2 on the season and 2-5 in League play.

Scharfenberg scored both Lafayette goals on assists from Sean Peckham. Scharfenberg leads the Leopards with seven goals and 16 points. Peckham's pair of helpers bump his assist total to six. Graham Heydtmade three saves in goal to post his seventh shutout of the season - five of which came in Patriot League play. The Leopards finish the League slate having allowed just two goals in 690:40 against Patriot League opponents.

The first goal came in the 17th minute, as a Peckham corner kick found Scharfenberg at the far post. The junior headed the chance past Bison goalkeeper Marc Hartman to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead.

With the Lafayette back line keeping Bucknell off the board, the Leopards added an insurance tally off of a set piece in the 66th minute. Peckham took the free kick, and once again his strike found the head of Scharfenberg, who redirected it into the back of the net and run the score to 2-0 in favor of the Leopards.

The Leopards were outshot, 14-10, and the Bison attempted four corner kicks to Lafayette's two.

Hartman was replaced in the second half by Tommy Caso, who made Bucknell's lone save and ceded the second Lafayette goal. Orman Kimbrough finished out the day in net for the home Bison.
