ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Lafayette men's lacrosse started Patriot League play at Navy on Saturday afternoon. The Leopards fell into an early 8-0 deficit and despite a 4-1 run to close the first half, fell 15-6 in Annapolis, Md.
Navy opened the game with a 7-0 run over the first 15 minutes of the contest. After the Mids made it 8-0 with 14:08 remaining in the second period, Lafayette used a man-up opportunity to come up with its first goal of the afternoon.
A pair of co-captains teamed up as Stefan Bauer, playing in his first game since the season-opener, found Tom Perini to get the Leopards on the scoreboard.
After a Cesar Munoz face-off win, the Leopards tallied the game's second-straight goal, this time an even-strength goal from Will Heffernan.
Navy answered with a goal at the 5:03 mark of the quarter, but Lafayette continued to chip away at the Midshipmen advantage.
Back-to-back goals from Heffernan and Doug Prusoff got the Leopards within striking distance (9-4) at halftime.
After senior Franklin Floyd notched his third goal of the season to make it 9-5 with 11:50 left in the third quarter, the Leopards and Mids exchanged chances with Lafayette holding a few opportunities to cut the deficit.
Instead, an even-strength Navy goal at the 9:22 mark pushed the Midshipmen lead back to five (10-5). From there, only Prusoff's third goal of the season found the back of the net for the Leopards, as Navy outscored Lafayette 5-1 throughout the remainder of the game.
Freshman Andrijko Andrusko and sophomore Ed Stubits both tallied five saves for the Leopards.
The Mids controlled the game through groundballs (41-15) and face-offs (18-7).
Lafayette returns home next Saturday when the Leopards host Bucknell. Face-off is set for 1 p.m. inside Fisher Stadium.
Fans unable to make it to College Hill for the game will be able to watch the game on LSN All-Access with Matt Provence and Matt Panto beginning at 12:55 p.m.
NOTES:
Bauer's return was limited, as the senior co-captain only took the field on the Leopard man-up attack.
Co-captain Jon Marcek also returns to the Leopard defense after sitting out last Friday's game vs. Penn due to injury.
Perini's goal gives him 111 for his career. He is currently second in the NCAA in career goals among active student-athletes.
