BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Lafayette baseball team dropped the finale of its west coast swing on Saturday, falling at Cal State Bakersfield by a score of 11-1. Freshman Eric Anderson notched his first career RBI for the Leopards, while senior A.J. Miller was the only Lafayette player to record a multiple-hit day.
With the loss, the Leopards fall to 4-11. The Roadrunners, who have been nationally ranked this season, improve to 16-5.
Miller went 2-for-3 on the afternoon, raising his team-best batting average to .426. Rob Froio, Alex Bechta, Thomas Dunleavy and Brian Davila rounded out the Leopards' offense with one hit apiece. Anderson's RBI came on a fielder's choice groundout in the ninth inning that plated Dunleavy a broke up the shutout.
Junior right-hander Ethan Perro (1-1) started and took the loss on the hill. He allowed six hits and five earned runs over the first 2.2 innings. He struck out two batters, hit two and did not issue a walk.
Tommy Hoenshell (4-2) went the distance for Bakersfield, scattering six hits and surrendering just one unearned tally. He struck out six batters and did not walk a batter.
Four different batters registered two RBI for the Roadrunners, punctuated by a two-run home run by first baseman Martin Medina.
The Leopards return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 23 for a showdown at Wagner. Kamine Stadium sees its first action of the 2011 season on Saturday, March 26 with a noon doubleheader against in-state rival Penn. Patriot League play begins the following weekend with back-to-back doubleheaders at Bucknell on April 2-3.
